Yes, is the simple answer after Black Panther star announced back in 2019 how she would be leaving the show after first joining in 2012.

Last night (March 22), Michonne’s exit scenes played out in the episode titled What We Become after she went on a mission with Virgil (Kevin Carroll) to a mysterious island.

During their time on Bloodsworth Island, Michonne found her lover Rick Grimes’ (Andrew Lincoln) cowboy boots which hinted he could be alive.

Michonne later happened across more clues suggesting Rick hadn’t perished six years ago and could be out there somewhere.

She discovered an old mobile phone with an image of herself and Rick’s daughter Judith Grimes (Cailey Fleming) etched onto the screen.

Additionally, Michonne stumbled across some documents which gave her fresh hope Rick might be not be dead.

Michonne made the big decision to go out into the wilderness and find Rick once more, hinting the pair are going to be reunited in The Walking Dead movies from AMC.

Speaking about her departure, star Gurira told Deadline said there was an “open-endedness” exit.

She said: “I thought it was beautiful that she got to, you know, kind of get cosmically rewarded for helping this weird guy, Virgil, who is played by a wonderful actor who I’ve always admired, Kevin Carroll.

“Rewarded by finding evidence that’s something she’s always suspected was true, which was that Rick didn’t die on that bridge.”

Gurira added: “So, you know, we’ll see how that goes. See what happens next or see if something happens.”

She later shared a video from The Walking Dead’s Twitter page with her 805,000 followers and simply captioned it with three heart emojis and “#TWDFamily. Forever”.

Reflecting on how her exit storyline came together, she said: “They came up with an amazing architecture for those characters, for the stories, and how to give her that sort of an ending.

“Then I worked a little bit with them. I worked with them on some of the architecture therein, which is very generous of them to embrace my thoughts and my contributions.”

The Walking Dead’s showrunner Angela Kang wouldn’t be drawn on whether Michonne would be reuniting with Rick in the films.

Gurira is going to be moving on to new projects, including serving as showrunner on an adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s best-selling novel Americanah.

The actress will be on writing duties while Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o will star and produce the show.

Americanah has been commissioned for a 210-episode limited run for HBO Max.

With the coronavirus outbreak shutting film and television productions across the globe, Gurira said the writing was still “very much alive and happening”.

Although Michonne may be leaving, there’s still plenty going on in the world of The Walking Dead with Maggie Rhee (Lauren Cohen) making a return in season 11.

The show will also be dealing with the fallout from Alpha’s (Samantha Morton) death at the hands of Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).

Beta (Ryan Hurst) will be razing Alexandria to the ground in revenge as chaos and Walker hordes will be used.

The Walking Dead airs on AMC on Sundays in the US and on FOX UK on Mondays in Britain at 9pm
