Outlander fans were first introduced to Brianna Fraser (played by Sophie Skelton) at the end of season two. However, the actor’s route to landing the part was not straight forward – here’s what the star has revealed about her audition process on the series.

Why did Sophie Skelton think she had been replaced as Brianna Fraser?

British actor Skelton beat out plenty of competition in order to win the part of Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser’s (Caitriona Balfe) daughter on Outlander.

As fans of the time-travelling drama will know, she has played Brianna since the end of season two and viewers have watched her grow into the role in the episodes since.

However, her journey to starring in the series was not a straightforward one.

The star has previously opened up about being convinced she hadn’t landed the part in the show.

Skelton revealed in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar how when she first got the audition for the part, she read as much of the books as she could to prepare.

She explained how the television series had not even been released yet so she just had the script to go from.

She said: “I called this local bookstore where I was staying and asked if they had the books and if they could sort of ship them in overnight.

“And I went and picked up the books, and then read as much about Brianna as I could. I just sort of fell in love with her.

“She’s one of those characters that you feel quite protective over all of a sudden, and I think she’s funny.”

However, despite this, she then revealed to the publication how it was a while before she heard back about getting the role.

Skelton explained: “You do so many auditions that you can’t really think about it, but there are some that actually really sting.

“And with Brianna, I was really quite gutted that I didn’t get the role.”

However, it turned out she need not have worried as the producers had just planned to bring her into the series at a different point.

As a result, they began hosting auditions again, which Skelton pursued and the rest is history.

She added: “I was like, ‘I did audition for this about a year ago.’

“And then I just found out that they never actually brought her into the series like they were going to. And then, yeah, that was that.”

For fans of the show, it is definitely hard to imagine the series without Skelton’s Brianna in it now.

This is especially because she has become such a huge part of the show thanks to her storyline in which she travelled back in time to be with her mother and father.

As well as this, fans have fallen in love with her romance with Roger MacKenzie (Richard Rankin) and their growing family.

This is set to follow into season six of the show, which is hoped to begin filming as soon as restrictions on production lift.

Outlander seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video now.
