Kate Garraway, 53, joined Adil Ray, 46, for the mid-week edition of Good Morning Britain and explained what she’d got up to at the weekend. With her husband Derek, 53, still in intensive care after a battle with coronavirus earlier this year, he was unable to be with his family to celebrate his birthday. As the political lobbyist remains in a comatose state, the presenter had to mark the occasion in a very different way as she gave an update on her family’s heartbreak on the ITV show.
Kicking off the show, the host said: “It was Derek’s birthday on Saturday which was obviously a challenging one under the circumstances.
“We managed to FaceTime him and sing happy birthday and we had a cake which we had on FaceTime,” she continued.
With Adil stating it must have been hard for the couple’s children, Kate added: “It’s very challenging, they’re [the kids] are doing brilliantly with it though.
“We just thought for us, we did it with Derek’s family as well, we managed to hook up technically and sing happy birthday.
“We just hope the love seeps through,” the presenter continued, with fans taking to Twitter to offer their support to the family.
One posted on the social media platform: “By far the most painful, heartbreaking Covid story I’ve heard. Bless you all Kate.
“Regardless of your views, she’s got kids whose father is seriously ill and her husband who she clearly dotes in.. it’s still a sad situation,” a second added.
A third commented: “Love to Kate and your beautiful family x,” with a fourth stating: “She’s amazing isn’t she.”
Whilst a fifth wrote after Kate joined Adil to front the show: “I love you two on GMB. My favourite combo.”
