One of Princess Diana’s closest friends has revealed he thinks the late Royal would have warned Prince Harry against doing his tell-all interview with Oprah.

Dr James Colthurst, who met Diana when she was just 17 years old, opened up about his relationship with her during an interview with the Radio Times, and also had his say on the now infamous interview.

Reflecting on Harry and Meghan’s decision to sit down with Oprah and tell their side of the story, James said he believed Diana would have encouraged the couple to attempt to fix things differently.

James said: “I’m not sure he would have got to the interview stage.”

He then added to the publication: “I believe she might have cautioned him beforehand to solve things in some other way.”

The interview, which was filmed in America and aired earlier this year, featured an in-depth conversation with Harry and Meghan, in which they opened up the reasons they had decided to leave Britain for the US.

The couple discussed tensions within the royal family, including with Prince Charles and Kate Middleton.

They also claimed there had been conversations about Archie's skin colour before he was born.

Following the explosive allegations, Buckingham Palace said they would privately address the things that had been said.

Elsewhere in the Radio Times interview, James threw his support behind Prince William’s opinions that the controversial Panorama documentary, which featured Martin Bashir and Diana, should never be allowed to be on screens again.

James explained: “It was created in a devious fashion, and I don’t think it needed to be that way. So yes, it should be put away.”

James is one of a number of Diana’s closest friends and confidantes to be included in ITV’s upcoming documentary, Diana.

To mark what would have been her 60th birthday, the special 90-minute programme features rarely seen archive footage and never-before-heard testimonies.

As it charts her incredible life from boarding school to Royal, and everything else in between, the film gives an insight into the complex woman behind the headlines.

Diana airs Thursday 24th June at 9pm on ITV
